The program fosters student creativity and musicality, enriching development through student collaboration and teamwork, and showcasing the creative process through live performance.
Kitchener-Waterloo jazz vocalist Mary-Catherine McNinch-Pazzano and bass player Mike Grace are teaming up to bring jazz education into local high schools. As professional musicians and certified teachers with over 40 years of combined education experience Mary-Catherine and Mike know the importance of receiving meaningful music instruction.
Firm believers in quality public music education that will enhance students’ music classroom experiences, Mary-Catherine and Mike have created an educational platform where students in Grades 9-12 will receive weekly jazz education workshops in their own high school.
A major focus of Jazz in the Schools is on the collaborative nature of jazz as an art form, and how playing jazz together mirrors the possibilities of interacting positively, equally, and beneficially with others, whether it be in students’ daily school routine, fostering healthy and lasting friendships, or looking ahead to the workplace after graduation.
